特に話し言葉では much はふつう疑問文や否定文で使われる. 肯定こうてい文で使われると形式張った感じになるので, as, how, so, too とともに使われるほかは, 代わりに a lot of, lots of, a good deal of, plenty of などを使うことが多い.

much of の次には限定された名詞が続く. 従ってその名詞の前には the, my などがつく. 人称にんしょう代名詞(it, him など)はそれ自体が限定された人[物]を示しているからそのままでよい.
